AIRLINE shares, including Ryanair and Easyjet, fell in Europe and Hong Kong yesterday as fears grew about a new strain of bird flu emerging in China.
Airlines were hit by fears that the outbreak could become widespread and affect demand for air travel. The Stoxx Europe 600 travel and leisure sector index fell as much as 1.6pc, the biggest fall among European sectors.
The drop even spilled over to European low-cost carriers who don't serve global routes, like Ryanair, which fell 3.4pc, and Easyjet, down 5.1pc, its most in a year.
"The sector is reacting to fears of a new pandemic of bird flu in China, which would hurt air traffic," said a Paris-based airline sector analyst.
